1316 Strategy Games

Critical Moves covers what’s coming. New releases, early access, whatever is landing on Steam this week. But the strategy genre has a history worth paying attention to, and a lot of it is getting buried under the avalanche of new releases. The retrospectives are here to dig some of it back up.

When I started this project I knew there would be a lot of games to cover. I didn’t know quite how many until I put them all in a spreadsheet.

Take a look at that.

That’s a snapshot of strategy games released since the early nineties across real-time strategy, 4X, grand strategy, turn-based strategy and turn-based tactics. That list only goes to line 63. The RTS column runs to line 629.

1,316 games. I had no idea the genre was this vast.

There is no way I cover all of them. The research alone would take several lifetimes. But I’m going to work through as many as I can, and I want to know which ones matter to you. Drop a title in the comments or send a request to sayhello[at]criticalmovespodcast.com and I’ll add it to the queue.

One question while I have you. What makes a strategy game a classic? Is it age, or something else? I have my own answer but I’d rather hear yours first.

Let me know you’re out there. It would be good to know I’m not just shouting into the void.

See you on the battlefield. Al.
