Technological Frustrations

Argh! Today I sat down to do some editing of a couple of episodes that have been recording and just need to be finalised. The editing process on Critical Moves has been amended somewhat from the initial plan when we brought on Brian as Sound Engineer. Essentially, editing a podcast is a lot of work. Most people say that it takes about four hours to edit one hour of audio. We needed to streamline the process as asking Brian to give up at least half a working day each week was just too much.

The new process is that Al does a content edit. This removes non-words, umms, ahhs, erms. Removes long pauses and misspeaks, restarts, that sort of thing. Aligns the audio files from each of the hosts on the episode.

Once this is complete the project is sent to Brian for a final polish, audio equalising, noise reduction, and many other processes I’m sure. Things well beyond my ability or comprehension.

Today I sat down to edit an episode and noted that one of the co-hosts (who shall remain anonymous to save his blushes) didn’t actually record anything. It’s an uncomfortable conversation when – of the three – one person is silent. I moved onto the next episode. Same issue.

There are many technology frustrations with a project such as this. Missing a third of the audio from an episode is just one of them!
